Our Client is a consumer products manufacturer that is a leader in their industry. They're headquartered in Kansas with facilities in four (4) US cities as well as Mexico, China and Canada. They manufacture hundreds of products under a wide variety of brand names and sell their products through multiple retail channels.
YOUR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
PEOPLE LEADERSHIP
Lead the product design team. Make project assignments. Review and evaluate technical contributions.
Develop product design team through direct guidance, special assignments and outside educatio
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Schedule team members to complete projects within established objectives.
Monitor the progress of each project and maintain available up-to-date information on status of project budgets, timelines and completion dates.
Work with Marketing and manufacturing to develop action plans to complete projects in a timely fashion.
Develop and maintain a project schedule for design projects.
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN
Provide direction to product design team members in the preparation of all required parts, subassemblies, final assembly drawings, and prints required in the internal or external manufacturing of our products consistent with Marketing's product specifications and targets.
Initiate, coordinate, and direct all internal and external scientific and technical studies.
Understand each customer's product testing and regulatory requirements and prepare designs and testing for compliance.
Oversee the construction of prototypes
Closely coordinate product design activities with Marketing to evaluate new product submissions.
initiate projects based on Marketing's direction that meet customer needs.
Participate in initiating new product ideas.
Focus on continuous improvement of the product development process to improve the introduction of new products.
Continue product support throughout the life of the product for both designed and acquired products.
Provide product failure analysis and technical recommendations related to customer product damage claims.
Support the supply chain in approving product changes from existing suppliers and approving new suppliers.
PRODUCT SPECIFICATION
Provide product specifications to maintain product integrity.
Provide counsel to manufacturing engineering for tooling requirements in the manufacturing of company products. Assist manufacturing engineering in make or buy decisions.
BUDGETING AND COST
Provide initial cost estimates to be used in preliminary product and project profit projections.
Monitor costs and develop new designs, methods, or material to reduce costs and/or improve quality
Obtain quotes on custom design, prototypes, or special built products.
Develop product design fiscal year budget based on available information and corporate objectives.
Monitor deviation from budget, and updates budget adjustments
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
Assure the security of intellectual property through understanding and management of the patent process.
Coordinate product related legal activities, including disclosure agreements, and research of competitive proprietary restrictions.
Assist in the preparation and support of patent applications; provide direction on value and need for existing patents.
Recommend and oversee any infringement actions needed to maintain intellectual property.
Monitor the status of relevant applications and issued patents in our product field and ensure non-infringement in new designs.
PRODUCT REGULATORY COMPLIANCE
Manage the process and systems for product regulatory compliance and the tracking thereof.
Manage the awareness of existing and pending regulations and regulatory trends, keeping necessary parties informed of them.
Manage response to any legal action resulting from real or perceived regulatory noncompliance.
YOUR BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE
EDUCATION
A Bachelors Degree in Engineering or a related technical field of study.
YOUR PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
10 or more years products design experience that includes consumer products
3 or more years leadership experience directing a product design team. Our client prefers those with mechanical and electrical design experience.
Prefer experience and an affinity to automotive and related products
CORE COMPETENCIES
Technical and manufacturing knowledge of plastic molding processes including injection, blow molding and structural foam.
Mechanical and Electrical product design and manufacturing
Management of the product patent process.
Coordinating and managing the consumer products regulatory compliance environment, including experience with major retailer requirements
